Castles and Palaces

The castle is the guardian spirit for the town of Scilla, about 20 km north of Reggio Calabria, and is certainly one of the most characteristic and typical elements of the Messina Strait and the Reggio Calabria landscape areas. The castle also houses one of the Navy’s lighthouses, the Scilla Lighthouse.

The castle, now a ruin, used to mark the historical border between Locri and Reggio.

All that remains of the castle, originally founded in medieval times, are a few ruins, following the 1693 earthquake.

The castle is known for its legends about Macalda of Scaletta.

The castle is also accessible by crossing the famous Caravilla Bridge, the only stone bridge in the world to be crossed three times.

The castle hosts the “Municipal Archeological Museum” and the “Centre for the study and conservation of the farmer society in Poro”.

The palace has hosted the Goethe-Institut until 2012.

The building served as the home of Professor Gennaro Bellavista, the character played by Luciano De Crescenzo in his two films ‘Così parlò Bellavista’ and Il ‘Mistero di Bellavista’.
